Obstetrics and Gyneacology is a subject which is teaching from the beginning of the Veterinary Education in our country since 1873 in military school. Between 1933 to 1952 Faculty of Veterinary Medicine was included in to the Higher Agricultural Institute. Within this period education of Obstetrics and Gyenacology was teached under authority of Surgery Institute Programme. At the beginning of the 1952 Obstetrics and Gyneacology Department and clinics were separated from surgery department.
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has contributed to the establishment of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of all veterinary faculties in our country from the day it was founded to the training of many faculty members. Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology ; fertilization and maturation, reproductive biotechnology and methods, puerperal period and its problems, infertility and sterility, pregnancy and physiology, fertility physiology and endocrinology, pregnancy and diagnosis methods, physiology and problems of pregnancy, normal delivery and medical and surgical approach to dystocia, oestrus synchronization and methods, gynecologic operations, mammary gland health and diseases, milking and hygiene, mammary health control programs, subjects are given theoretical and practically. Master’s and doctoral programs are organized and researches are being carried out. Clinic and outpatient clinic services are provided for diagnosis, treatment and operations of all diseases related to pregnancy, birth and gynecology in pediatric clinic.
In the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology there are 5 faculty members (Prof. Dr. Ayhan Baştan Anabilim dalı başkanı, Prof. Dr. Şükrü Küplülü, Prof. Dr. Rıfat Vural, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Kaymaz ve Associated Prof. Dr. Halit Kanca), 6 research assistants(Res. Asist. Dr. Esra Çolakoğlu, Res. Asist. Dr. Kübra Karakaş Alkan, Res. Asist. Dr. Seçkin Salar, Res. Asist. Murat Onur Yazlık, Res. Asist. Taha Burak Elifoğlu, Res. Asist. Serdal Kurt) and 2 administrative staff.
The department consists of an administrative building and a clinical building. The offices of the faculty members and their assistants in the administrative building and various laboratories (mastitis, in vitro and hormone laboratories) are located.
The clinic building is 2 floors, the upper floor is small animal clinic, the lower floor is large animal clinic. Diagnosis and treatment of obstetric, gynecological and uremia related diseases of pet animals with modern diagnostic methods are performed in small animal clinic. Small animal clinic consist of registration section, 1 operating room, 2 anesthesia and reanimation room, 1 sterilization unit, 1 vaginal cytology laboratory, 3 patient examination rooms, 1 hospitalization room and 1 classroom. The large animal clinic consists of a large operation room, a phantom, a practice room for slaughterhouse materials and fetotomie, one cleaning and washing room, and few treatment and hospitalization rooms.
Obstetrics and gynecology undergraduate program is teaching in the second half of the fourth year in veterinary medicine education. In the same period mammary gland health and control programs in dairy cows (This course will be obligatory for undergraduate students from 2018 fall semester) , reproductive biotechnology and reproductive herd health management courses are given in elective courses section. Practical education are given to the intern students in the clinic and the field.
