Veterinary medicine education in Turkey started with the introduction of veterinary medicine courses in Military Cavalry Schools in 1842. In 1849, veterinary classes were opened in Istanbul in the Military Academy. At the beginning of 1900s, these classes turned to Military Veterinary School. The Military Veterinary School and Civil Veterinary School were united in 1920 and named as High Veterinary School. In 1933, High Agriculture Institute was established in Ankara and High Veterinary School joined this formation in the same year. The initiator academic staff of the veterinary surgery in Turkey was Prof. Dr. Max Gebhart and Prof. Dr. Ludwig Lutz. Prof. Salih Zeki Berker, Prof. Dr. Tevfik Başer and Prof. Dr. Burhanettin Öktem were the first Turkish veterinary surgeons in Ankara University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Prof. Dr. Bekir Sıtkı Artun -1934, Prof. Dr. Hayrettin Anteplioğlu – 1951, Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Samsar- 1960, Prof. Dr. Doğan Aslanbey – 1961, Prof. Dr. Öztürk Tekeli – 1962, Prof. Dr. Faruk AKIN – 1963, Prof. Dr. Arkun CANDAŞ – 1972, Prof. Dr. Burhanettin OLCAY – 1974, Prof. Dr. Zeki ALKAN – 1981, Prof. Dr. A. Perran GÖKÇE – 1984, Prof. Dr. F. Eser ÖZGENCİL – 1985 were the academic staff who have worked and retired at Surgery Department.
Today 13 academic staff (6 professors, 2 associated professors, 5 research assistants) carry out the academic activities in our department. In addition those, 5 administrative personnel officiate. Surgery Department provides services within the scope of providing policlinic services for all domestic and wild animals’ diseases in Ankara University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Animal Hospital. In this scope, Radiodiagnostic Unit (Digital Radiography, Ultrasonography, Doppler Ultrasonography, Echocardiography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Computed Tomography), Endoscopic Examination (arthroscopy, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, bronchoscopy, cystoscopy, gastroscopy, colonoscopy), Arthroscopic, Laparoscopic and Thoracoscopic Surgery, Neurology&Neurosurgery, Microsurgery, Veterinary Dentistry, Veterinary Ophthalmology, and Physical Therapy-Rehabilitation Units are routinely used for diagnosis and treatment purposes.
Undergraduate, graduate and doctoral lectures are given according to animal species in our department. Veterinary undergraduate programs include Anesthesia and Reanimation, Surgery, Traumatology and Orthopedic Surgery, Radiology, Foot Diseases and Nail Techniques, Eye Diseases, Dental Diseases, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, Wildlife and Welfare lectures.
Large and small animal operation halls for soft tissue surgery and orthopedic interventions, and Anesthesiology&Reanimation units were present in our department. Operation halls are equipped with world-class equipments. These halls have ceiling lighting, anesthesia devices, central gas system, aspirator system, patient head monitors and electrocautery devices. There are intensive care units for cats and dogs and a patient preparation room. There are 6 examination rooms where patients are routinely examined. In these examination rooms; soft tissue, orthopedics, eye, ear, teeth diseases and therapies are done. In addition to those, there are neurophysiology laboratory, physical therapy-rehabilitation unit, gait analysis unit and radiodiagnostic unit.
Scientific studies for educational and research purposes are carried out under the projects supported by Ankara University Scientific Research Fund, TUBITAK, Ministry of Development, Ministry of Food Agriculture and Livestock.
