Program Objectives

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine organizes educational, research and practical programs about husbandry, reproduction, improvement of generation and productivity, protection from diseases, treatment of diseases, preventive medicine for the zoonotic diseases of farm animals, pets and poultry animals, quality and safety control of animal products, pollution, marketing of live animals and animal products.

Suggestions to Whom Planning to Prefer Veterinary Faculty

Students should have an interest in scientific lessons such as biology and chemistry in high school period. Students, who want to be a veterinarian, have to like animals firstly. Students who prefer Veterinary Faculty are expected to be tolerant, attentive, well observer and have hand skills, discernment, and ability to transfer their ideas and opinions to the colleagues.

In terms of occupational services, veterinary is a quite hard profession. Beside the pleasure of healing an animal, students have to consider about the difficulties of this profession.


Two different undergraduate programs, in Turkish and in English Language, have being carried out in FVMAU. These two programs are accepting students from all nationalities. Turkish students can also attend for the English veterinary undergraduate program.

English Education Period

First matriculated students can attend the English language education for a 1 year period of time if they wish. They also have a chance to take computer training in this period. This education period is not included to the 5 years of veterinary education.

Main Lectures in Veterinary Education

During the first two years of the education theoretical and practical information about Medical Physics, Medical Biology, Organic Chemistry, Anatomy, Histology, Embryology, Physiology and Biochemistry are given. In third and fourth years the lectures given are on animal breeds, animal breeding, microbiology, virology, parasitology, pharmacology, internal diseases and surgery. Also clinical and laboratory applications carry out. The senior students take especially occupational lectures such as examination and processing of animal products, breeding of animals by natural and artificial methods, clinical surgery, internal diseases and gynecology and obstetrics in the final year and also can find an opportunity to make practice in laboratory and on animals in clinics. Mobile clinic and ER applications are also obligatory lectures for the senior students.

The ratio of practical application hours in an occupational lesson are more than 50% of total lesson period. Students must participate at least 70% of theoretical and 80% of practical lessons to pass those.

Ankara University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine carried out veterinary education and research services as the first and the only veterinary faculty in Turkey till 1970 and then provided collaborations to other veterinary faculties in their organization process.
